March 2026 Cultural Observances and Women’s History Month

March 2026 is particularly meaningful as we celebrate Women’s History Month while observing numerous cultural and religious traditions that shape the lives of our community members.

Women’s History Month: Celebrating Trailblazers

March is dedicated to recognizing the contributions and achievements of women throughout history. This month offers an opportunity to celebrate women leaders, scientists, educators, and healthcare professionals who have shaped our society and broken barriers.

In healthcare, Women’s History Month reminds us to honor pioneering women in medicine who have advanced patient care and opened doors for future generations. From early nursing pioneers to groundbreaking surgeons and researchers, women have been integral to medical progress while often facing significant obstacles.

Women have long been an integral part of healthcare. As part of women’s history month, we recognize three notable trailblazers:

  • Elizabeth Blackwell (1821–1910) broke a historic barrier in 1849 as the first woman to earn a medical degree in the United States, opening doors for women in medical training and professional leadership.
  •  Rebecca Lee Crumpler (1831–1895) advanced both medicine and equity as the first African American woman to earn an M.D. (1864), serving patients at a time when racism and sexism limited access to care and opportunity.
  • Susan La Flesche Picotte (1865–1915), the first Native American woman to earn a medical degree, combined medicine and surgery in service of her community, modeling how culturally grounded care and education can expand access and improve health outcomes.

Honoring Historical Figures

Harriet Tubman’s Birthday (March 10th) celebrates the American abolitionist and political activist best known for her work with the Underground Railroad, through which she helped hundreds of enslaved people escape to freedom. A former slave herself, she also served as a scout, spy, and nurse for the Union Army during the Civil War, becoming a symbol of courage and freedom.

International Women’s Day (March 8th) is a global celebration of women’s social, economic, cultural, and political achievements, while also marking a call to action for accelerating gender equality.
